Chinatown Gateway CharetteThank you all for coming to the launch of the Chinatown Gateway charrette and making it a success! Over seventy-people attended the the start of the much anticipated community charrette including City Councilor Sam Yoon, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, the Mass Turnpike Authority and many community residents and leaders. Simultaneous interpretation was provided through the use of translation headsets to Chinese-speaking participants. The Chinatown Gateway Coalition also needs to thank Elaine Ng, Director of Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center and the BCNC staff for allowing us to use their space. The first day of the charrette explained the importance of the Chinatown Gateway's 20-acre area to Chinatown and neighboring communities. Presentations of previous studies were given by the Boston Redevelopment Authority on the South Bay Phase I Report, and a Chinatown Housing Inventory report by the Chinese Progressive Association. The consultant team of SAS Design, Howard/Stein-Hudson Associates, and the Cecil Group gave a visual overview of the existing conditions of the Chinatown Gateway area, highlighting the area's potential and challenges to developing the site. The 2nd charrette on Saturday, July 14 (9:30am - 5:00pm, Metropolitan Community Room, 38 Oak St. Boston, MA) will build off the work from the first day. On Saturday, participants will be placed in 5 groups representing different Chinese elements and will be asked to go into the community along with a digital camera to document where they like to live, work, shop, play, etc... Afterwards, each of the 5 groups will make a visual presentation to which the consultant team will design possible future scenarios for the Chinatown Gateway. The schedule for the next two charrettes are: Saturday, July 14 9:30am - 5:00pm If you were not able to come to the 1st day of the charrette and would like attend this Saturday's sessions, please contact Chinatown Gateway coalition coordinator Kye Leung at info@chinatowngateway.org What is this community charrette?A forum that is open to all community members to put their ideas together into a plan to improve the community.
